Binding Description

Later plain maroon library cloth with gilt spine lettering “ROSETTA STONE” and “U. OF PA.,” a paper shelfmark label, and a rear-board barcode label. Original binding, rebinding date, and binder unrecorded.

Edition Evidence

The chromolithographic title bears “SECOND EDITION” in red block capitals.

Physical Features and Condition

The text block is largely intact but fragile. The title, dedication, and preface leaves are loose: the title is separated about 1 cm from the gutter, with a small loss at its lower outer corner; the others are fully detached. Minor wear along the lower edges and fore-edges.

A Union League of Philadelphia bookplate records the former shelfmark Class 419, No. 1, also given on the library’s card-catalogue entry. The Union League seal is embossed at the upper right of the title, and Union League ownership stamps appear throughout. Earlier ownership and the date and source of acquisition are unrecorded.
