Binding Description

Original green publisher’s cloth with a gilt sphinx, brown-stamped circular bands, border, and corner ornaments. The spine has gilt lettering and brown-stamped motifs.

Provenance

The front pastedown bears Joseph Y. Jeanes’s Philadelphia bookplate, with manuscript number 2008. A separate manuscript note laid over the title page records an 1859 copyright entry naming Hale, Jones, and Morton. The route from Jeanes’s library to Delaware is not yet documented.

  • The chromolithographic title states “SECOND EDITION.”
